Chapter No: 11

Abu Razin said: "I asked: 'O Apostle of Allah ﷺ! Where was our Lord before He created His creation?' He said: 'He was (above) the clouds - no air was under him, no air was above him, and He created His Throne upon the water.'"

Narrated from Abu Musa (RA) that Allah’s Apostle ﷺ said: " Allah, the Blessed and the Exalted, gives respite to the wrong-doer till when He seizes him, then he cannot escape." Then he recited the Ayah: And such is the seizing of your Lord when He seizes (the people of) towns while they are transgressing (11:102).

Narrated from Ibn Umar (RA) that Umar bin Al-Khattab (RA) said: "When this Ayah was revealed: Some among them will be wretches and (others) blessed (11:105). I asked the Apostle of Allah ﷺ saying: 'O Prophet of Allah! on what do we perform deeds, on what has been determined already, or on something that has not been pre-determined?' He said: ' Rather on what is pre-determined as the pens have recorded it, O Umar! But only that is made easy for a man for which he is created.'"

Abdullah (RA) said: "A man came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: 'I fondled a woman at the outskirt of the city, and did with her everything except sexual intercourse, and here I am, so judge in my case as you will.' So, Umar (RA) said to him: 'Allah concealed you, so you should have concealed yourself.' Allah’s Apostle ﷺ did not give him any reply. The man walked away but the Apostle of Allah ﷺsent a man after him to call him. He recited to him: ‘And establish salah at both ends of the day, and in the early hours of the night. Surely, good deeds erase bad deeds. That is a reminder for the mindful (11:114) until the end of the Ayah. A man among the people asked: 'Is this specific for him?' He ﷺ said: 'No. Rather for all of the people.'"

Mu'adh bin Jabal (RA) said: "A man came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: 'O Apostle of Allah ﷺ! What do you say about a man who meets a woman there being no acquaintance between them and the man does with her everything a man does with his wife, except having sexual intercourse?'" He said: "So Allah revealed: And establish salah at both ends of the day, and in the early hours of the night. Surely, good deeds erase bad deeds. That is a reminder for the mindful (11:114). So, he commanded him to make Wudu and offer Salah." Then Mu'adh said: "I asked: 'O Messenger of Allah! Is that specifically for him, or for the believers in general?' He said: 'Rather it is for the believers in general.'"

Narrated from Ibn Mas'ud (RA) that a man unlawfully kissed a woman. So, he approached the Prophet ﷺ to ask him about its expiation. So (the following) Ayah was revealed: And offer the Salah, at the two ends of the day and in some hours of the night (11:114). The man asked: "Is this specifically for me O Messenger of Allah ﷺ?" He said: "For you and for whoever does that among my Ummah."

Abu Al-Yasar said: "A woman came to me to buy dates from me. I said to her: 'There are better dates than these in the house.' So, she entered the house with me. I bowed towards her and kissed her. I went to Abu Bakr (RA) and mentioned that to him, so he said: ‘Conceal what you have done, repent, do not inform any one, and never do it again.' So I went to Umar (RA) and mentioned that to him. He said: ‘Conceal what you have done, repent, do not inform anyone, and never do it again.' But, I was impatient and I went to the Prophet ﷺ and mentioned it to him." He said: 'Is this how you have taken care of the wife of someone who is away fighting in Allah's cause?" Such that he had wished he had not accepted Islam until that very time, and he thought that he must be one of the people of the Fire." He said: " Allah’s Apostle ﷺ bowed down his head for a long time, until Allah revealed to him: And establish salah at both ends of the day, and in the early hours of the night. Surely, good deeds erase bad deeds. That is a reminder for the mindful (11:114). Abu Al-Yasar said: "So I went to him and the Apostle of Allah ﷺ recited it for me. A companion of his said: "O Apostle of Allah! Is this specific (for him), or is it for the people in general?" He said: "Rather it is for the people in general."

Narrated from Abu Hurairah (RA) that Allah’s Apostle ﷺ said: "Indeed, the noble, son of the noble son of the noble, son of the noble was Yusuf son of Ya’qub son of Ishaq son of Ibrahim." He said: "And if I were to have remained in the prison as long as Yusuf, then the messenger came, I would have responded positively." Then he recited: When the messenger came to him, he said: " Go back to your lord and ask him, ‘What about the women who cut their hands? (12:50)' He said: "May Allah have mercy upon Lut, he wished to get shelter in a strong support, since he said: "Would that I had strength to overpower you, or that I could betake myself to some strong support (11:80)." So, Allah did not send a Prophet after him but from the crest of his (own) people."

Ibn Abbas (RA) said: "The Jews approached the Prophet ﷺ and said: 'O Abul-Qasim! Inform us about the thunder, what is it?' He said: 'An angel among the angels, who is appointed over the clouds. He has a whip of fire wherever that he drives the clouds wherever Allah wills.' They asked: 'Then what is this noise we hear?' He said: 'It is him, striking the clouds when he drives them on, until it goes where it is commanded.' They said: 'You have spoken the truth.' They asked: 'Then tell us about what Isra'il made unlawful for himself.' He said: 'He suffered from sciatica, and he could not find anything comforting him except the flesh of camel and camel milk. So, he made these things unlwaful.' They said: 'You have spoken the truth.'"

Narrated from Abu Hurairah (RA) that the Prophet ﷺ commented on the words of Allah: " And we make some better than others in taste (13:4)." He said: "The Daqal, the Persian (referring to different kind of dates), the sweet, the bitter."

Anas bin Malik (RA) said: "The Apostle of Allah ﷺ was brought a dish with unripe dates on it. He recited (the verse): A good word is like a good tree, having its root firm and its branches in the sky. It brings its fruits at all times with the will of its Lord (14:24 & 25).' And he said: 'It is the date-palm.' And the parable of an evil tree uprooted from the surface of the earth, having no stability (14:26). He said: 'It is the colocynth tree.'"

Al-Bara (RA) narrated from the Prophet ﷺ regarding Allah's saying: Allah keep the believers’ firm with the stable word in the worldly life and in the Hereafter (14:27). He ﷺ said: "In the grave, when it is asked from him: 'Who is your Lord? What is your religion? And who is your Prophet?'"

Chapter No: 15

Ibn Abbas (RA) said: "There was a woman who used to offer Salah behind the Apostle of Allah ﷺ and she was the most beautiful among the people.

Abdullah (RA) said: "I took a walk with the Prophet ﷺ on a farm in Al-Madinah, and when he reclined upon a palm-leaf stalk, a group of Jews were passing by. Some of them said, 'We should question him.' Others said: 'Do not question him for he might tell you something that you do not like.' They said to him: 'O Abul-Qasim, narrate to us about the Ruh.' The Prophet (ﷺ) stood for some time, he raised his head toward the heavens, and I recognized revelation was coming to him, until the revelation ceased. Then he (ﷺ) said: "The Ruh is one of the things, the knowledge of which is only with my Lord. And of knowledge, you have been given only a little (17:85).'"

Narrated from Abu Hurairah (RA) that Allah’s Apostle ﷺ said: "On the Day of Resurrection people will be gathered in three categories: A category of those walking on foot, a category of those riding, and a category of those walking upon their faces." It was asked: "O Messenger of Allah! ﷺ How will they walk upon their faces?" He said: " he who makes them walk on their feet is Able to make them walk on their faces. Know that they will walk on their faces safeguarding from every ascent and thorn."

Bahz bin Hakim narrated from his father, from his grandfather [who said:] " Allah’s Apostle ﷺ said: 'Indeed you shall be gathered walking, riding, and being dragged upon your faces.'"

Safwan bin Assal Al-Muradi said: "There were two Jews, one said to another: ‘Come let us go to this Prophet.' So his companion said: 'Do not call him: "Prophet," because if he hears you calling him a Prophet then he will be happy.' So, they went to the Prophet ﷺ to question him about Allah, the Most High, saying: And certainly we gave Musa nine manifest signs (17:101). So Allah’s Apostle ﷺ said to them: 'Do not associate anything with Allah, nor commit unlawful intercourse, nor take a life which Allah has made prohibited, except for what is required (in the law), nor steal, nor practice magic, nor hasten to damage the reputation of an innocent person in front of a ruler, so that he will be killed, nor consume Riba, nor falsely accuse the chaste woman, nor turn to flee on the day of the march (i.e. flee from war).' - Shu'bah was in doubt - 'and for you Jews particularly, to not violate the Sabbath.'" He said: "So they kissed his hands and his feet and they said: 'We bear witness that you are a Prophet.' So, he said: 'Then what prevents you from accepting Islam?' They said: 'Because Dawood (AS) had prayed that Prophets should not cease to come in his offspring and we fear that if we submit the Jews will kill us.'"

Narrated from Ibn Abbas (RA) regarding (Allah’s saying): 'And offer your Salah neither aloud nor in a low voice (17:110)." He said: "It was revealed in Makkah. When Allah’s Apostle ﷺ would raise his voice with the Qur'an, the idolaters would insult him, the One Who revealed it, and the one who came with it. So, Allah revealed: And offer your Salah neither aloud (so that they would not insult the Qur'an and the One who revealed it, and the one who came with it) nor in a low voice (too low such that you can let your Companions hear it, and learn it from you)."

Narrated from Ibn Abbas (RA) about Allah's saying: "And offer your Salah neither aloud nor in a low voice but seek a middle course between." He said: "It was revealed when Allah’s Apostle ﷺ was hiding himself in Makkah, and when he led his Companions in Salah, he would raise his voice with the Qur'an. So, when the idolaters heard it they would insult the Qur'an, the One Who revealed it, and the one who came with it. So, Allah, Most High, said to His Prophet: 'And offer your Salah neither aloud' that is: Your recitation, so that the idolaters would not hear it and insult the Qur'an. 'Nor in a low voice (too low)' for your Companions, 'but seek a middle course between.'"

Zirr bin Hubaish said: "I asked Hudhaifah bin Al-Yaman (RA): 'Did Allah’s Apostle ﷺ offer Salah in Bait Al-Maqdis?' He said: 'No.' I said: 'But he did.' He said: 'You say that, O bald one! Based upon what do you say that?' I said: 'Based upon the Qur'an, (the Judge) between you and I is the Qur'an.' So Hudhaifah said: 'Whoever argues using the Qur'an, then he has indeed succeeded.'" (One of the narrators) Sufyan said: "He means: 'He has indeed proven'" - and perhaps he (Sufyan) said: "He triumphed." He (Zirr) said: "Glorified is He Who took His slave for a journey by night from Al-Masjid Al-Haram to Al-Masjid Al-Aqsa (17:1).' He (Hudhaifah) said: 'Do you see (this proves that) he ﷺ offer Salah in it?' I said: 'No.' He said: 'If he had offered Salah in it, then it would have been required upon you that you offer Salah in it, just as it is required that you perform Salah in Al-Masjid Al-Haram.' Hudhaifah said: ' Allah’s Apostle ﷺ was brought a beast with a long back - stretching out like this - one stride of it, is as far as his vision. So, the two of them remained upon the back of Al-Buraq until they saw Paradise and the Fire, and all of what has been prepared for the Hereafter, then they returned back to where they began.' He said: 'They say that he was fettered, but for what? Because he might flee? The Knower of the unseen and the witness subdued him.'"

Narrated from Abu Sa'eed Al-Khudri (RA) that Allah’s Apostle ﷺ said: "I will be the chief of the children of Adam on the Day of Judgement and I am not boasting, and in my hand will be the standard of praise and I am not boasting, and there has been no Prophet since Adam or other than him, except that he will be under my standard. And I will be the first for whom the earth will split open, and I am not boasting." He said: "The people will be terrified by three frights. So, they will come to Adam (AS) saying: 'You are our father Adam, so intercede for us with your Lord.' So, he will say: 'I committed a sin for which I was sent down to the earth, so go to Nuh (AS).' So, they will come to Nuh (AS) and he will say: 'I supplicated against the people of the earth, so they were destroyed. So, go to Ibrahim (AS).' So, they will go to Ibrahim (AS), and he will say: 'I lied three times.'" Then Allah’s Messenger ﷺ said: "He did not lie except defending Allah's religion." "So, go to Musa (AS).' So they will come to Musa (AS), and he will say: 'I took a life. So, go to 'Eisa (AS). So, they will come to 'Eisa (AS) and he will say: 'I was worshiped besides Allah. So, go to Muhammad ﷺ.'" He said: "So they will come to me, and I will go to them." (One of the narrators) Ibn Ju'dan said: "Anas (RA) said: 'It is as if I am looking at Allah’s Apostle ﷺ, and he is saying: "So I will take hold of a ring of a gate of Paradise to rattle it, and it will be said: 'Who is there?' It will be said: 'Muhammad.' They will open it for me, and welcome me saying, 'Welcome.' And I will fall down in prostration and Allah will inspire me with (words of His) praise and glorification. I will be told, “Raise your head and ask. You will be given. Intercede and t will be accepted. And say, your word will be heard.” This is al-Maqaam al-Mahmud (Praised Station) about which Allah has said: "Soon your Lord will raise you to a Station Praised." (17: 79)." Sufyan said: "None of it is from Anas except this sentence: 'I will take hold of a ring of a gate of Paradise to rattle it.'"

Chapter No: 18

Sa'eed bin Jubair said: "I said to Ibn Abbas (RA): 'Nawf Al-Bikali claims that Musa (AS), of Banu Isra'il was not (the same as) the companion of Al-Khidr. He said: 'The enemy of Allah has lied. I heard Ubayy bin Ka'b (RA) saying: "I heard Allah’s (RA) ﷺ say 'Musa (AS) stood up to deliver a sermon to the children of Isra'il. He was asked: "Who is the most knowledgeable among the people?" He said: "I am the most knowledgeable." So, Allah admonished him for not attributing knowledge to Him (Allah). Allah revealed to him: "A slave, among My slaves at the meeting point of the two seas, is more knowledgeable than you." So, Musa (AS) said: "O Lord! How can I find him?" He said to him: "Carry a fish in a basket, wherever you lose the fish, then he is there." So, he set off, and his young servant set off with him - and he was Yusha' bin Nun (AS). Musa (AS) placed a fish in a basket, he and the servant set off walking, until when they reached a rock, Musa (AS) and his servant fell asleep. The fish stirred within the basket, falling into the sea.' He said: 'Allah held back the flow of water until it was like a tunnel, and the fish could glide. Musa (AS) and his servant were amazed. They set off the remainder of the day and the night, and Musa's companion forgot to inform him (of the escape of the fish). When Musa (AS) got up in the morning, he said to his servant: Bring us our breakfast, certainly we have encountered fatigue from this journey of ours (18:62).' He said: Indeed, Musa did not feel fatigued but only after they had gone past the place which they had been commanded to seek. The servant said: "Did you see when we took refuge on the rock, then I indeed forgot the fish - and none but Satan made me forget that I should speak of it - and it took its way into the sea; what a wonder!"(18:63) Musa said: "That is what we were seeking." (18: 64) “So they returned retracing their footsteps.” (18: 64). He said: 'So they began retracing their tracks.'" Sufyan (one of the narrators) said: "People claim that there is a spring of life at that rock, no dying person has its water poured over him, but he becomes alive, and the fish came in contact with some of it, so when the water dropped on it he became alive." "He [the Prophet (ﷺ)] said: 'They retraced their tracks until they arrived at the rock to see a man covered in a garment. Musa greeted him, and he replied: Is there such a greeting in your land? He said: I am Musa. He said: Musa of the children of Isra'il? He said: Yes. He said: O Musa! Indeed you have some knowledge from Allah, which Allah taught you, which I have not been taught, and I have some knowledge from Allah, which Allah taught me, which you have not been taught.' So Musa said: May I follow you so that you may teach me something of the knowledge which you have been taught? (18:66) He said: Verily, you will not be able to have patience with me! And how can you have patience about a thing which you know not? He said: If Allah wills, you will find me patient, and I will not disobey you at all (18:67-69). Al-Khadir said to him: Then if you follow me, ask me not about anything until I myself mention it to you (18:70). Musa said: Yes. So Musa and Al-Khadir set off walking along the shore of the sea. A boat was passing by them, and they spoke to them (the crew) asking them to let them get on board. They recognized Al-Khadir so they let the two of them ride without charge. Al-Khadir took one of the planks (in the boat) and removed it, so Musa said to him: These people gave us a ride free of charge, yet you sabotaged their boat so that its people will drown. Indeed you have done a dreadful thing (18:71). He said: Did I not tell you that you would not be able to have patience with me? (18:72). He said call me not to account for what I forgot, and be not hard upon me for my affair (18:73). Then they exited the boat, and while they were walking upon the shore, they saw a boy playing with two other boys. So Al-Khadir took him by his head, pulling it off with his hands, and he killed him. So Musa said to him: Have you killed an innocent person who killed no one! Verily you have done a horrendous thing (18:74). He said: Did I not tell you that you would not be able to have patience with me? (18:75) - he (the narrator) said: - "This was more severe than the first one" - He said: If I ask you about anything after this, you have received an excuse from me. So they both proceeded until they came to the inhabitants of a town. They asked them for food but they refused to entertain them. There they found a wall on the verge of falling down (18:76 & 77). He (the narrator) said: - meaning leaning over - 'So Al-Khadir took his hand like this, so he set it up straight (18:77) so Musa said to him: We arrived at these people, they did not treat us as guests nor feed us. If you wished, surely you could have taken wages for it! He said: "This is the parting between you and I. I will tell you the interpretation of (those) things over which you were not able to be patient (18:77 & 78).'" The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: 'May Allah have mercy upon Musa! We wish that he would have had patience, so that we could have more knowledge about that two of them.' He said: 'So the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: 'The first time Musa had forgotten.' He said: 'And a sparrow came, until it perched on the edge of a boat, and pecked at the sea. So Al-Khadir said to him: My knowledge and your knowledge do not diminish anything from the knowledge of Allah, but like what this sparrow diminishes of the sea.' Sa'eed bin Jubair said: "and he would" - meaning Ibn 'Abbas - "recite: 'And there was before them a king who would take every useful boat by force (18:79).' And he would recite: 'As for the boy, he was a disbeliever (18:80).'"

Narrated from Ubayy bin Ka'b (RA) that the Prophet ﷺ said: "The boy that Al-Khadir killed was destined to be a disbeliever the day he was created.'"

Narrated from Abu Hurairah (RA) that Allah’s Apostle ﷺ said: "He was called Al-Khadir because he sat on a barren land which turned green below him.” (Khidr means ‘green.)."

Abu Ad-Darda (RA) narrated from the Prophet ﷺ regarding Allah's saying: And there was beneath it a treasure belonging to them (18:82) – he ﷺ said: "Gold and silver."

Narrated from Abu Rafi a Hadith of Abu Hurairah (RA) from the Prophet ﷺ, regarding the 'barrier (18:93).' " They (Yajuj and Majuj) dig it every day till they nearly bore a hole in it. Then he who is over them (their chief) says, “Return. We shall bore the hole tomorrow.” So, (they go away and) Allah replaces it stronger than before (This) till the term appointed arrives and Allah intends that they should go and overpower mankind, and the one who is over them will say, “Return. We shall bore the hole tomorrow if Allah wills” - included this proviso. Thus, they will return and find it exactly as they had left it and they will bore the hole and pounce on the people drinking up the water, and the people flee from them. They will shoot their arrows into the heavens so they will return dyed with blood, and they will say - crudely and arrogantly - 'We have subdued those in the earth, and we have dominated the inhabitants of the heavens.' Then Allah will grow a worm in their necks and they will perish. He said: “And by Him in Whose Hand is the soul of Muhammad the beasts of the earth will fatten and flourish and give thanks on (eating) their flesh.”

Abdul-Hamid bin Ja'far said: "My father informed me, from Ibn Mina, from Abu Sa'eed bin Abi Fadalah Al-Ansari (RA) - and he was one of the Companions - who said: 'I heard Allah’s Apostle ﷺ say: "When Allah will assemble the people on the Day of Judgement - a Day in which there is no doubt in - a caller will proclaim: 'Whoever committed Shirk in any of his deeds he did for Allah - then he must seek his reward from other than Allah. For indeed Allah is the most independent of partners and of association."

Chapter No: 19

Al-Mughirah bin Shu'bah (RA) said: " Allah’s Apostle ﷺ sent me to Najran. They said to me: 'Don’t you people recite: O sister of Harun (19:28) - while between Musa (AS) and 'Eisa (AS) there is such (gap) as there is?' I did not know how to respond to them. So, when I came back to the Prophet ﷺ, I informed him about that, and he said: 'Why didn't you tell them that they were named after their Prophets and righteous people before them.'"

Abu Sa'eed Al-Khudri (RA) said: " Allah’s Apostle ﷺ recited: And warn them of a Day of anguish (19:39) and he said: 'Death will be brought in the shape of a mixed black and white ram, until it will be stopped at the barrier between Paradise and the Fire. It will be said: 'O people of Paradise! They will raise up their necks to look. It will be said: 'O people of the Fire! And they will raise up their necks to look. It will be said: 'Do you recognize this?' They will say: 'Yes. This is death.' Then it will be laid down and slaughtered. If it were not that Allah had decreed that the inhabitants of Paradise would remain, then they would have died of joy, and if it were not that Allah had decreed that the inhabitants of the Fire would remain, then they would have died of grief.'"

Regarding Allah's saying: And we raised him to a high station (19:57). Qatadah said: "Anas bin Malik (RA) narrated that Allah's Prophet ﷺ said: "When I was taken to the heavens, I saw Idris on the fourth heaven."

Ibn Abbas (RA) said: " Allah’s Apostle ﷺ said to Jibra'il (AS): 'What prevents you from visiting us more often than you visit us?'" He said: "So this Ayah was revealed: And we (the angels) descend not butt by the command of your Lord. To Him belongs whatsoever is before us, and whatsoever is behind us." Up to the end of the Ayah (19:64).

As-Suddi said: "I asked Murrah Al-Hamdani about the saying of Allah, Mighty and Sublime is He: And there is not one of you but will pass over it (19:71). So, he narrated to me that Abdullah bin Mas'ud (RA) narrated to him saying: 'Allah’s Apostle ﷺ said: "The people will pass over the Fire, then they go away from it according to their deeds. The first of them will go away as fast as the spark of lightning, the second batch like wind, the next at horse speed, the next like a camel-rider and then like a man running away and then as one who walks."

Abdullah (RA) said about: 'There is not one of you but will pass over it (19:71) – “They pass over it, then they will go away from it based upon their deeds."

Narrated from Abu Hurairah (RA) that Allah’s Apostle ﷺ said: "When Allah loves a slave, He calls Jibra'il (AS), (saying): 'Indeed I love so-and-so, so love him.'" He said: "So he calls out in the heavens. Then love for him descends among the people of the earth. That is as in the saying of Allah: Surely those who believe and do righteous deeds, for them the Compassionate (Allah) shall assign love (19:96). And when Allah hates a slave, He calls out to Jibra'il (AS) (saying): 'Indeed I hate so-and-so.' So, he calls out in the heavens. Then hatred for him descends upon the earth.'"

Masruq said: "I heard Khabbab bin Al-Aratt (RA) saying: 'I came to Al-'As bin Wa'il As-Sahmi to collect a debt he owed me. He said: 'You shall not be given anything until you reject Muhammad.' So I said: 'No, not until you die and be resurrected.' He said: ‘Will I die and be resurrected?' So I said: 'Yes.' So he said: 'I shall indeed have wealth and offspring to repay you with.' So (the following) Ayah was revealed: Have you (O Prophet) considered him who disbelieves in Our revelations and says, ‘I shall certainly be given wealth and children?" (19:77).'"

Chapter No: 20

Abu Hurairah (RA) said: "While the Apostle of Allah ﷺ was coming back from Khaibar he traveled during the night until he became sleepy, and he sat down to rest. Then he said: 'O Bilal! (RA) Stand guard for us for the night.'" He said: 'So Bilal (RA) offered Salah, then he leaned against his mount facing the direction of (dawn awaiting) Fajr. His eyes overcame him until he slept, and not one of them awoke. The first of them to awaken was the Prophet ﷺ who said: 'O Bilal!' Bilal said: 'May my father be ransomed for you O Apostle of Allah! I was overtaken just as you were overtaken.' So, Allah’s Apostle ﷺ said: 'Move out!' Then he kneeled to make Wudu and to announce the standing for the Salah, then he offered Salah the same as he would when not traveling. Then he said: 'And establish the Salah for My remembrance (20:14).'"
